Bollywood has always been very progressive as far as dressing style is concerned. From adopting foreign culture to creating their unique niche in the world of fashion, Bollywood has done it all. It has also been instrumental in the fashion choices in the country. I cannot deny those days in my childhood where I use to sit glued to the television just to watch how the actresses walked, what they wore and blindly follow the trend.
I may have outgrown that addiction, but it is not entirely lost in me. I did buy the sari that Priyanka Chopra jived to in the Desi Girl song. Now that summer is here and the sands and the waves await me, I am ready to indulge in some great beachwear. For inspiration, where would I go but Bollywood! Get to know how you can include bollywood actress beachwear to your wardrobe and walk in style.
Remember Dilli ka Thug! Doesn’t ring a bell! Remember Nutan in a black swimsuit? Yes, it was one of the most iconic moments in hindi cinema, with swimwear featuring in movies. It was a basic swimming costume that went beyond the hip line to almost mid thighs. Zoom back to the modern times, swimwear now has undergone a huge change. With variations in cuts and colors, shape and fabric, swim wear has come a long way.
I just love Priyanka Chopra’s look in Dostana. Absolutely fabulous, it is. It accentuates the curves in the right places. Plus the glitter makes it party on the beach. I will love to team it up with a pair of slippers and absolutely nothing, no beach bag, no hat. The dress speaks for itself.
String Bikini with Sarong
It was Dimple Kapadia, who set the screen on fire, when she adorned that red two piece in Bobby. People went crazy, from excitement to anger, there were variety of reaction from different sections of the society. But, one thing that occurred was that the stage was set for bikini. This year string bikini is high up on the chart. If you have washboard abs, do not shy away to strut you stuffs in a black number like Anushka Sharma in Ladies vs. Ricky Behl.
My personal choice is taking a sarong like Alia Bhatt (I need to work on my lowers more). Pair it up with beach bag, sunnies and slippers and you are totally beach ready.
Playsuit (cocktail – Diana penty)
I just love the movie Cocktail. Besides the fun treatment, the movie gave the world some superb fashion ideas, especially beach edition. From the coral bikini Deepika wears to the playsuit of Diana, at one point I have craved for all of the items. Playsuits are the greatest treasure for those, who are bikini shy. It gives a fun and relaxed undertone to your whole personality and at the same time, fit to be a party attraction.
You can pair your printed playsuit with a montone sheer shirt or even wear them solo with a buckle belt, beach slippers and do not forget to add some beach waves to your locks.
Cotton Shorts with Casual top
The thing about beach wear is that they must be cool, casual and comfortable, just the way Deepika shows us in Bread ke Baad. I love how graphic tees have been combined with cotton shorts. You can go for a monochrome shorts like her, but if you love adventure, try out tribal printed shorts paired with plain tees.
For a more glamorous look, change the tees to a bikini top. As for the color palette, white is a safe choice, personally I love red and multicolors.
Beach Maxi dress (Katrina – zindagi na milegi dobara)
This is my personal favourite. A pair of Maxi dress is what can transform you from a girl next door to a diva. They are great to hide all the extra bulges we have here and there, also with a good accessory, they can be turned from beach wear to party wear. Good investment! All that you need to be a beach rock star is a maxi dress, a beach tote, sunnies, a colourful hair band and last but not the least beach slip ons.
As for the silhouette, a sleeveless is more suited for the beach and opt for airy fabric. As for the colors, floral prints are great but tones like orange, coral, blue, white and sea green never go out of fashion.
Again a stellar for those on the curvy side; a kaftan dress is a beach essential. Accentuate the part you want by going for a deep neckline or a shorter length.
If you want a full coverage, opt for full length and a beach bun. As for the accessories, do not overdo a kaftan. Keep it simple with a pair of bangle and a small Potli bag.
Cotton skirts are great for the beach. Bollywood has time and again given us a mini skirt and top as beachwear. You can wear yours like Deepika does in a sequined number with a crop top or you can also fashion it like Aishwariya in Dhoom 2, wearing your skirt over swimming costume.
Tip to remember: Invest in a pair of good bikini bottoms or thongs, you definitely don’t want your granny inners showing underneath your skirt.
A denim is one such item that can be used in a lot many different ways. Not only are they a summer essential, but also a beach must have.
Not to forget the fact that they form an important item in Bollywood actress beachwear wardrobe. Don’t forget to pair up with a printed or monotone bikini top.
Palazzo and crop top
Crop Tops are a rage this year and so are palazzos. Both combined together is a successful recipe for Bollywood actress beachwear. More the prints, better it is. Contrast is trending this season and so is pastel. You can opt for a pastel crop top and pair it up with quirky printed palazzos.
For a traditional feel, opt for Rajasthani prints. Team it up with a pair of beach pumps and aviator to make a classy statement. Throw in a beaded bandana to infuse a gypsy look.
Sheer cover up
Sheer has always been in vogue. You can go full sheer over your bikini like the way Jacqueline does or you can also wear a sheer top over your tankini like Esha Deol has worn in Dhoom. One of the best part of a sheer cover up is it gives a sense of exposing without having to expose much. Another must have bollywood actress beachwear.
Not to forget a black sheer is one of the most fashionable pieces, worn by both Bollywood beauties and Hollywood hotties. A little bit of patchwork or embroidery looks good on a sheer.
