On 1952, Armi Kuusela of Finland became the first ever Miss Universe. It was a dazzling ceremony at the Auditorium in Long Beach, California. According to the pageant’s rulebook, marriage is prohibited as long as you hold the crown. Finally, she decided to give up her crown, and settled for love.

The 1974 Miss Universe, held in Phillipines, is still considered to be one of the most controversial events in the pageant’s history. The winner, Amparo Muñoz of Spain, gave up her title within 6 months, to get into movies. Besides the violation of contract, further controversies sprang up as there was nobody to replace her. The runner up Miss Wales was discovered to be an unwed mother. For the remaining 6 months, the position lay empty with no beauty queen.

1997 Miss Universe Alicia Machado of Venezuela faced a serious threat to her title, when Pageant’s committee decided to dethrone her for putting on weight. Donald Trump called her an “eating machine”. First Runner up Miss Aruba Mansell was being considered as a replacement. There was worldwide criticism against the decision. Even Alicia started working out, so much so that the idea was dropped.
In a strange series of incidents, Miss Universe 2002, Oxana Fedorova, was dethroned and replaced. Miss Panama Justine Pasek took over the crown. The reason given by the authoritative body, for the termination, was her incapability to perform her duties of Miss Universe. Even today, the case remains controversial.
The Nude Poser Controversy
According to the contract of Miss Universe, the beauty queen cannot get involved in any activity, which breaks the classy image. Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins of Australia contravened the rule by posing nude for Hustler Magazine. Talks of her replacement emerged on the surface, but she managed to keep her title.
The Big Leak
One of the steamiest of controversies occurred when a sex tape of Anye Ayoung-Chee, contesting in Miss Universe 2008, surfaced in the news. Among the bevy of long tresses, she sported a Halle Berry-esque pixie. When she could not make it to the final three, her grandfather cried foul, saying, “If short hair is a problem why didn’t they say so in the contest”.
